Helpful website advice

Choosing website colours that work

Use colour to express your identity, organise information and keep content readable.

Start with your existing identity

Your school or business may already have recognisable colours. Use them as a starting point rather than adding a new palette that feels disconnected from your signs, logo or printed materials.

Give colours a purpose

A small palette is easier to keep consistent. Choose a colour for key actions, a neutral background and a readable text colour. Use additional colours only when they help organise the page.

Check contrast, not just appearance

A colour combination can look attractive while being hard to read. Check text and controls against their backgrounds, including hover and focus states. Large background photographs often need careful treatment.

Never rely on colour alone

An error message, selected option or important status should also have a text label or another clear cue. This helps visitors who cannot distinguish the colours you have chosen.

Keep the tone consistent

Bright accents can add warmth and energy. Used consistently, they can guide attention without making every part of the page compete. Judge colours alongside typography, content and spacing.
