Design around the task
A mobile visitor may want a phone number, opening time, term date or quick answer. Make the important information easy to reach without a long search through decorative content.
Use a flexible layout
Layouts need to adapt to different screen sizes. Columns should become readable stacks, images should fit the screen and long words or tables should not push the page sideways.
Keep controls comfortable
Menus, buttons and form fields should have space around them. Add appropriate input types for email and telephone fields, use visible labels and make error messages clear.
Keep pages light
Use correctly sized images, reserve their space and avoid loading heavy features on pages that do not need them. A fast connection on your own computer is not a good proxy for every visitor’s experience.
Check more than one device
Try the site on a narrow screen, a tablet and a desktop. Test navigation and forms, increase the text size and check keyboard access. A responsive layout still needs practical checking.
